BREEAM Excellent & Level 5 Code for Sustainable Homes
Value:
£18m
A BREEAM ‘Excellent’ rating was required for the University of Bristol’s £18m Hiatt-Baker Hall, a new, 447 bed halls of residence scheme comprising cluster flats, townhouses and a warden’s house, while achieving a 20% reduction in CO2 emissions through the use of on-site renewable technology.
We were appointed during the concept design stage to provide extensive sustainability advice on behalf of the University. Our role involved acting as sustainability advocate, as well as BREEAM AP, to ensure sustainability was integral to the design and was considered from the outset. Relevant issues included an appropriate choice of renewable technology, reducing the energy demand from hot water, minimising heat loss through the fabric and social and environmental integration with the existing campus.
Our initial scope was extended to include a full BREEAM for Communities assessment for the planning submission. BREEAM for Communities is required by Bristol City Council for all super-major schemes and was relatively new at the time, so we were very excited to be working with the University to carry out this assessment.
