Client: University of Exeter and University of Falmouth
Architect: Burwell Deakins
The £11m Exchange building is a 3,000m² BREEAM Excellent extension to the main campus library at the Falmouth campus of the Combined Universities in Cornwall. Careful consideration of the phased working and integration with the existing services was essential in order to seamlessly integrate the new services with existing services.
The main space is naturally ventilated with openable windows and passive stack ventilation drawing exhaust through the central stair and circulation space.
The scheme also featured a series of thermal-lead gas CHP engines which maximise energy efficiency and provide low-carbon heating and electricity to both the new extension and the existing building.
