Stowmarket High School
Client: Wates Construction
Architect: Jestico and Whiles
Stowmarket High School is a new ESFA-funded £9.5m, 6.5 FE school for Suffolk County Council.
The project presented several challenges, in particular the need to keep the existing school fully operational during the construction of the new building. Minimising the number of new incoming supplies required to keep the new school running, whilst commissioning the new building, was a technical challenge. The existing sixth form block, which was part of the original school building, was retained. This presented a challenge to minimise the amount of downtime whilst the surrounding school was demolished and new water and energy supplies provided to recommission the sixth form block as a stand-alone building. We conducted extensive computer thermal modelling to minimise the amount of cooling and maximise the scope of natural ventilation to comply with the ESFA Facilities Output Specification.
Full BIM Level 2 was a requirement of the project and we developed our design using REVIT MEP to provide a fully coordinated 3D model. We undertook a BREEAM Pre-Assessment with an aspiration to achieve an Excellent rating. The addition of a PV array ensures we meet the local authority planning requirement for a 10% renewable energy contribution and will reduce energy bills for the school.
