Fossebrook Primary School
Client: Leicestershire County Council
Architect: Kast Architects
This new 1500m² primary school in Braunstone, Leicester is less than 500 metres from the noisy M1 motorway but was delivered for a challenging budget of just £3.5m.
The school features a simple, intuitive, BB101-compliant natural ventilation system that incorporates a combination of intelligently located window openings and a series of acoustically treated dampers and louvre sets. A south-facing canopy minimises glare and solar heat gains whilst ensuring an uninterrupted view from the extensively glazed classrooms. Thermal mass, acoustic attenuators and ventilation stacks, allied to a night-time cooling strategy, maintain air quality and ensure that classrooms remain thermally comfortable.
A biomass boiler also provides low carbon heat as well as ongoing revenue generated through the Renewable Heat Incentive scheme. Other features include underfloor heating, sprinklers, LED lighting and low water use sanitary ware.
