Chiltern Academy is a new ESFA-funded £17m eight-form entry academy for Chiltern Learning Trust and Luton Borough Council.
The project presented several challenges, particularly its location on the Luton Airport flight path which made noise an issue. Full mechanical ventilation was required, but there was an expectation to avoid cooling where possible. It meant that we conducted extensive modelling with building physics advice and we developed a mechanical ventilation solution which meets the ESFA Facilities Output Specification, whilst keeping the windows closed and without requiring mechanical cooling, except in IT-intensive spaces. Full BIM Level 2 was a requirement of the project and we developed our design using REVIT MEP to provide a fully coordinated 3D model prior to construction.
The addition of a PV array ensures we meet the LBC planning requirement for a 10% renewable energy contribution and will reduce energy bills for the school.
