Sustainability Services: NABERS UK

NABERS UK is a system for rating the operational performance and in-use energy efficiency of buildings. The scheme provides a rating from one to six stars (in half star increments) for commercial offices.

Originally an Australian scheme, this relatively new accreditation in the UK helps landlords understand their buildings’ performance against similar developments and provides a benchmark for the improvement of building efficiency.

It also allows buildings to be marketed as NABERS accredited, which as the scheme becomes more widespread will be beneficial to both developers and prospective tenants.

The scheme is currently applicable to landlord systems only and does not yet cover tenants’ small power and lighting; as such it is preferable for a NABERS building to have the tenant HVAC systems served and maintained by the landlord.

The NABERS scheme in the UK is administered by the Building Research Establishment (BRE).
