This significant £11.5m extension to Thorndown Primary School near St Ives includes fifteen additional classrooms over two storeys to enable the school to become a 3FE school, to serve a rapidly growing local community.

This new build project also houses a new staff room, main hall and Discovery Centre for learning and links to infant and junior spaces to create a single learning environment.

The project was assessed under the 2011 scheme and was required to achieve a target BREEAM rating of Very Good. Carbon dioxide emissions are reduced through an automatically controlled natural ventilation system which allows for secure nighttime cooling, and an air source heat pump was installed to provide low carbon heating.

A phased construction by Kier allowed the school to remain open during the works which was crucial for the client.
